Short Answer Type Question :-
Q.1) Who was Mahesh? How did Gafur feed him?
Ans. Mahesh was the bull of Gafur. Gafur feed him with old straw and rice- water. Due to draught he was not able to look after the bull properly.
Q.2) Who was Amina? Who slapped her and why?
Ans. Amina was the daughter of Gafur. She was motherless child of ten years. One day Gafur was very hungry and thirsty. He asked her for some food and water. But she could not give it to him. Being angry Gafur slapped Amina.
Q .3) What for did Gafur come to Banshi’s shop secretty in the cover of darkness.
Ans. Gafur was in an urgent need of a rupee. He wanted it to get his bull back from police pen. For borrowing
the rupee, he came to Banshi’s shop secretly in the cover of darkness.
Q .4) Why did Gafur kill the Bull-Mahesh?
Ans. Gafur heard the cry of Amina outside the house. He saw that the pitcher was broken and the water was flowing on the ground. He thought that the bull had hurt Amina for water. In anger he hit the bull with his plough head and killed him.
Q .5) In what way are Gafur, Tarakratana and Shibu Babu related?
Ans. Gafur is a poor weaver. He lives in a village Kashipur. He is a tenant of Shibu Babu who is the landlord of the village. Tarakratana is the family priest of Shibu Babu.
Q .6) Why did Gafur threw away a ten rupee note?
Ans. When Gafur was unable to feed his bull, he decided to sell it. When he came to know that a butcher was buying Mahesh, he threw away ten rupee note as he loved the bull like his son.

Q .1) Was Gafur a cruel old man? List the circumstances that led to the killing of the bull Mahesh.
Ans. Drought is a very pathetic story by S.C. Chaterjee. It is the story of poor weaver who lived in the village, Kashipur. His daughter Amina also lives with him. He used to till the hand for land lord. It did not rain at all that year. The fields and ponds were dried up. Gafur was in debt. He had no rice to eat and no straw to feed his bull-Mahesh.
There are a good number of circumstances leads to the killing of bull-Mahesh. That are given below:
1. Being no rains, there was no grass in the field for animals. Gafur had nothing to give to his bull. There was no water left for men and animals to drinks.
2. one day the hungry and thirsty bull entered the garden of Manic Ghose. He sent it to police pen. Gafur had to pauen his brass  plate for getting the bull out from police pen.
3. The other day the bull entered the grounds of land lord and ate up the flowers. He also upset the corn and hurt the daughter of land lord. Getting angry, Gafur beat him badly.
4. Gafur was sick and become weak by fever. He was very hungry and thirsty. So he asked Amina for some feed and water. There was nothing in the house. So she went out for water after some time she could bring a small quantity of water from the dry time.
5. when she entered the yard of her home. She cried loudly. Gafur came out and found her lying flat on the ground. The water was flowing and the bull was sucking it.
6. Gafur thought that the bull had injured Amina for water. He become very angry and lost his self control. Then he hit the bull on its had with the plough head soon the bull died.
 But Gafur was not a cruel  man. He was a kind man. He was good master and a good father. He loved the bull just like his son. He did not sell in to butchers. He feed it with old straw and rice water. He could not see tears in his eye. He seems to be cruel due to his poverty dept and drought.
Q.2) Write the character sketch of Gafur?
Ans. Drought is a very pathetic story by S.C. Chatterjee. Gafur is the main character in this story. He is a poor weaver. He lives in the village –Kashipur with his motherless daughter Amina. He suffer badly at the hand of the land lord, he has no food to eat and no straw to feed his bull-mahesh.
The main qualities of his are given below:-
1. A kind man- Gafur lives in a small village and passes a very simple life. Being poor he can satisfy the hunger of his bull and Amina. But he is not a cruel man. He work from morning till evening. But he is always in debt. Drought has affected his life badly. The land lord does not give him any straw. So he has nothing to feed-Mahesh. His heart is full of kindness for the bull. So he does not sell it to anyone.
2.His loving nature- Gafur loves Amina very much. She had not her mother but his father takes her great care. He also loves the bull just like a son. He begs rice water from the neighbors. He also feeds it with old straw. He pawns his brass plate to get animal back from police pen. He does not sell it to but chars. In anger he slaps Amina but soon he repents. He proves himself  a loving father and good master.
3. An Emotional person- Sometimes Gafur loses self control and become very angry. He looks like a mad man in anger. It is the weakness of his life. He slaps Amina without her fault. After this he kills the bull in anger but it was not his real nature. His problems due to drought made him a bad man, it is said’ “A hungry man is an angry man.” While leaving his village he says’ “Allah! Punish me as much as you like but never forgive the sins of the land lord.”  It shows his anger nature.
4. An Honest man- Gafur is a hard working person. Drought has ruined his life. He never thinks to steal rice or straw from his anywhere. Every time he asks help from his neighbors and the land lord. He passes a hard but honest life in the village.

In short Gafur is a poor, honest, loving and hard working person. He suffers very much due drought.

                                    The Selfish Giant                             -Oscar Wild
Short Answer Type Question:
Q .1) When did the children play in the Giant’s garden?
Ans. Coming from school, the children played every afternoon in the Giant’s garden.
Q .2) Why did the Giant build a high wall round his garden and put up a notice board?
Ans. The Giant built a high wall round his garden so that the children might not enter his garden. He said that he would not allow anyone to play there and put up a notice board there.
Q .3) Why it was still winter in the garden of selfish Giant?
Ans. There was still winter in the garden of selfish Giant because there were no children. He stopped them to play in it. Nature punished him badly.
Q .4) Autumn gave no fruit to the Giant’s garden. Why? Or
How was the Giant punished? What was his offence?
Ans. The spring came all over in the country. Only in the garden of the Giant, it was still winter, the snow, frost and the hale visited his garden. Autumn gave golden fruit to Giant’s garden. Thus he was punished. His offence was that he did not allow the little children to play in the garden.
Q .5) Why was the Giant rewarded? What was his reward?
Ans. The Giant was rewarded because he felt his mistake. He declared that his garden would be a play field for the children forever and ever. His reward was that he got paradise.

Q .1) Narrate briefly the story the selfish Giant in your own word? What lesson do you learn from it?
Ans. ‘The selfish Giant’ is a story of a very cruel Giant. He  is the symbol of evil. He had a large and lovely garden. The children played in it every afternoon when they returned from the school. Once  the Giant come back after seven years visiting his friend the Cornish.
                        He saw that the children were playing in the garden. He cried loudly, ‘what are you doing there’? At this the children ran away. The Giant said that it was his garden and no one would enter it. He build a high wall around it and put a notice board------ “Trespassers will be prosecuted”
      When the children  saw it they were very sad. As they had no place to play. But nature could not tolerate his behavior. The spring come but it did not go to his garden, it was still winter there. The snow covered up the grass. The frost painted all the trees silver. The north wind roared all day in the garden. The hale came and there was no fruit and flower on the trees. His garden got no change after autumn season. Now he felt that he was very selfish.
               One morning the Giant heard the a little linnet singing outside his window. He came out and sow a wonderful sight. The children had entered the garden by a little hole. He saw that a little was sitting in every tree. So the trees were covered with blossoms. The birds were flying and singing. Only a small child was unable to climb on the tree. He was weeping badly. He felt pity in his heart and said , “How Selfish I have been!”
                  He opened  the front door and went in to the garden. Seeing him, all the children ran away accept the little boy. The Giant put him up in to the tree and it blossomed with flower. The little boy flung his arms and kissed him.
                   All the children came again there, they know that the Giant was not cruel and hateful now. He said, “it is your garden now , little children.”
   One day the Giant saw that little boy standing under tree. These were some wound in his hand and feet. He asked the children about it, the child said, “These are the wound of love.” Then the Giant asked him , “Who are you.”
The Giant was filled with a strange fear to see the boy. The child smile on the Giant and said, “you let me play in your garden, today, You shall come with me to my garden, that is paradise.!”
One day when the children returned from the school they found the Giant lying dead under the tree. Finally it was victory of good over evil.
      The story teaches us that we should not be selfish and share our joys and prosperity with poor. We should also love the little children because they are Gods in the from of little children.

Ans.: The name of the author’s pen pal was Alice. She lived in Los Angeles, America.
Q .2) Why was the author so keen to have a pen pal?
Ans.: The author was so keen to have a pen pal because it was the fashion of his time. Many boys and girls of his class had made pen pal in other country. They received fast air mails from their friends. So the writer also wanted to take a pen pal.
Q .3) How old was the author when he entered a pen friendship?
Ans.: The author was a college student when he entered in open friendship. He was twenty one year old at that time.
Q .4) Why did the author choose to buy an expensive writing pad? What prompted him to buy a writing pad of pink sheets?
Ans. The writer bought an expensive writing pad to make a good impression on his pen pal. He was advised to buy a writing pad of pink sheet because a girl of his class told him that she loved letters written on pink sheet. So he thought that all the girls would love pink sheets.
Q .5) What did the author feel when he wrote his first letter to Alice?
Ans. When the author wrote his first letter to Alice, he was as nervous as a school boy taking his very first exam. He also felt as if he was facing enemy’s bullet as he dropped the letter into the post box.

Ans. after receiving Alice’s first letter, the author read it many times. The letter gave him all the joy of life. He felt as he was in seventh heaven.
Q.7) Why did the Author ask Alice her picture?
Ans. The Author asked the picture of Alice to know the age of her beauty.
Q.8) Why did Alice not send her picture to the author immediately?
Ans. Alice did not send her picture to the author because she did not want to disappoint the Author by telling the fact that she was an old lady.

Ans. As years rolled by, the author grew olden, got a job, married and had children. He did not write a letter to Alice regularly.

Ans. A close friend of Alice sent a large packet to the author from America. It contained a few magazines and a short note about her death.

Ans. pen pal is a romantic story by G. Srinivasrao. The story gives us an idea of pen friendship. It has a great scope for our young people.
           Though pen friendship we can come in contact with people of different countries. We know their custom and culture, exchange gift with them and develop international brother hood for peace and pleasure.
The author was a twenty one years old college student when he fells in love with his pen pal. She was an American girl. The author wrote a letter to her and received its reply. He was very happy to have a loving pen pal. After some time, he wants to know about her beauty and age. So he asked her picture but being very clever she told him that at present she had no picture. But very soon she would sent to him. Though she was not too smart and stylist.
         After this the author though that Alice was too clever and smart. She was hiding something. His mood changed and he called his friendship as a game of hide and seek. Now, he did not write to her regularly. He became a man of word. He was got married too.
          One day he received a large packet from America. It was the close friend of Alice. She told the writer that Alice died in a car accident last Sunday. She was seventy eight years old. So she could not see the car. But she became very happy to know about you. She was alone in the world and helping others was her passion.
         Now the author was very emotional felt great respect for Alice in his heart, he saw her photo and impressed greatly.
          The story teaches us that our young people should learn to have move self control in the field of love and romance. They should not follow any girls blindly.

Ans. The police man on the beat was going up the street impressively. He was trying every door with his club. He also looked at the lonely road.
Q.2) Who was the man to discover that Bob was wanted by the police? Mention his source of information?
Ans. Jimmy was the man to discover. That Bob was wanted by the police.
Q.3) When and where had the two friends parted twenty years ago?
Ans. Jimmy and Bob were parted with each other after twenty years ago from “Big Joy and Bready” restaurant in New York.
Q.4) How did Jimmy manage to get his friend arrested?
Ans. When Jimmy came to know that Bob was a criminal wanted by the police, he did not arrested him but he sent another policeman in plain clothes to arrested him.
Q.5) Who had sent plain clothes man to arrest Bob?
Ans. Jimmy had sent plain clothes man to arrest Bob.
Q.6) What was Bob’s face like?
Ans. Bob’s face was pale and square – jawed. His eyes were keen. There was a little white scar near his right eyebrow.
Q.7) Why did Jimmy get Bob arrested?
Ans. Jimmy got Bob arrested for his criminal ways. He was an honest police man. So he thought that a criminal should be arrested no matter If he was his friend.

 Q.1) Bring out the qualities of Jimmy as a policeman and as a friend?
Ans.  ‘After twenty year’ is the story of two sincere friends. They are Jimmy and Bob. Once they sat in a restaurant and discussed their future career. They promised to meet each other just on the same time, date and place after twenty years. So Bob goes to the west and becomes a rich man by unfair means.
He is wanted by police. But Jimmy does not go outside his city and becomes a dutiful policeman. He always remember Bob and his friendship.
The main qualities of  Jimmy as a policeman and as a friend are given below:
1. Jimmy as a friend: Jimmy was a true friend of Bob. They loved each other very much since their childhood days. Bob says that Jimmy will meet him there if he is alive because he is very true and best friend in the world.
             When Jimmy found that Bob was a criminal, he wanted to arrest him. But being a loving friend, he did not arrest Bob himself. He was shocked to see him as a bad man. In this way Jimmy kept his promise of twenty year ago and proved himself as a good friend and true well- wisher.
2. Jimmy as a policeman:  jimmy had all the good qualities of an able policeman. His body is tall and strong. He goes on the beat in every weather. His eyes are watchful. He looks like a guardian of peace.
                    He is an honest policeman. He loves law and order more than any other thing in the world. After seeing Bob as a criminal he decided to punish him. He thought that every criminal should be caught and sent to the jail. But he was also a great friend. So he moves a way from there and sent another policeman in plain clothes to arrest him.
                           Thus we have seen that Jimmy was not only a good  friend but also a dutiful policeman. He has a high respect for his duty and low.
Q.3) Compare and contrast the character of Jimmy and Bob.? OR
        How did the two friends differ such from each other.
Ans.  After twenty years is a teachingful story by ‘O’ Henry. This is the story of two fast friends-Jimmy and Bob. They loved each other very much. Once they parted for twenty year to make their career. Bob becomes a rich man but wanted by police. But Jimmy becomes a dutiful policeman.
    In this story we find that they have many similar qualities in life. But these are contrasting qualities also in their life, which are given below:-
1. Jimmy is a poor and honest policeman while Bob becomes rich in the best and he is very ambitious.
2. Jimmy is called a lazy person. But Bob says that he is a busy man.
3. By nature Bob is a talkative. Jimmy is a man of serious nature.
4. Bob likes to earn money by unfair means in life. But Jimmy is an honest man. He is sincere to his duty
5. Jimmy is a loving friend so he does not arrest Bob by himself. But Bob forgets the value of life when he begins to earn money.
   Thus we find that jimmy and Bob have very little in common. Their life is quite different with each other.
       Although their childhood was similar yet youth become different.

From, The Passing Of The Author          - Alfred Lord Tennyson

“Every man should welcome change in life.”
“Prayer is very important and highly powerful.”
“Changement is the second name of life”
            The poem “The Passing Of Author’ expresses poet’s firm faith in God and prayer.
                                  In It King Arthur has given valuable advises to be diver who has a knight of the round table and a faithful companion of the king.
                                  The king says that change is the law of life. He could not be sorry for the old system. However noble and good a system maybe, It will corrupt the world if it continues for a long time.
                                  So he should not be sad but pray to god for the peace of  kings soul. Prayer is the best thing on earth. Those who do not pray to god are not better than animals. Prayer is a link that binds us by golden  chains with the feet of God.
   Explanation

Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem “The Passing Of Author” composed by Alfred lord Tennyson, A great poet of Victorian age.
Context: Here king author consoles sir Bedivere and  tells him the value of religious life.
Explanation: King Arthur says  that A man has mind but animal does not have such great mind. The people
                   He tells him about prayer and its effect on life. He says that prayer has a great power
Saying this king Arthur tells him that now he has to go and you to live here. And he moves on his way.

My Heaven            - Ravindra Nath Tagore

                                                                        Central Idea
                 “In free India people should know the value of freedom and live with piece and pleasure.”
My Heaven by R. N. Tagore is an inspiring poem. In it the poet gives the picture of an ideal India of his dream. He prays to God that the people of his country should be fearless and brave. Knowledge should be free for all in the country.
There should not be narrow divisions of caste, religion, creed and language. The people should be guided by religion and not by blind belief. They should be progressive in out look.
They should try to keep the country united. They should be blessed with freedom.
Note: In this poem the poet says that motherland is greater than heaven.

Context: Here the poet appeals the God to make his country great in all fields. They should get freedom soon in their life.
Explanation: The poet says that the people of free India should be progressive in thought and action. They should be guided by reason not by blind faiths.
               He says that the clear stream of reason should not flow through the desert of old customs and traditions otherwise the reason would be lost. People will become backward and superstitious. They will not achieve success in life. He also thinks that everyone should be ready to follow new knowledge and skill by the grace of God.
Thus everyone will make progressive in life and enjoy the joy of freedom. The poet imagines that the picture of free India should be wonderful and matchless.

                                     Stopping by woods on a snowy evening                  - Robert Frost
                                                                                                                               (1875-1969)
                                                                   Central Idea
               In this poem the poet starts with a fine narration about the woods. He tells us about the situation that is related to the life of an ordinary man.
But soon he moves on the philos direction. It shows a relation between the call of beauty and the
Call of duty. The dark woods are filling up with coldness of snow. They are also a symbol of death. They warn the people but the man has a strong attraction for it.
The poet is also attracted by the natural beauty (Maya) of  dense forest. But soon he thinks that he should not enjoy it as he has to face the needs and demands of life. Thus life wins over death.

Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem ‘Stopping by woods on a snowy evening’ composed by ‘Robert Frost’, The Greatest American Poet.
Context: Here the poet stops by woods to admire the beauty of nature on a snowy evening. But he feels that his horse does not like his unsafe place.
Explanation: The poet says that his little horse (mind intellect) is very anxious about his stay in the forest. The situation is very dangerous. The snow is falling constantly. On one side there are woods filling up with snow. On the other side there is lake that is frozen due to cold and snow. There is no form -house to take shelter.
He is unable to save himself from danger of the evening. After some time it would be too late to save life. The horse has a natural power of the instinct which warn him of danger.

                                                    The Song Of The Free                      -Swami Vivekanand
                                                                        Central Idea
               In this poem the poet has expressed his faith in the divine character of human soul. A man who believes in God, is not afraid of all the world’s pain, troubles and failure.
               He knows that Godhood is the goal of human life. He should march forward to achieve it. He should leave his right path.
In fact, the ups and downs of life give him a chance to show his best powers.
Note: The poet believe that God is great and a man should have faith on him as well as his soul.

Context: Here the poet tells us about the reactions of an injured snake and lion.
Explanation: The poet says that on being harmed, the wounded animals react with anger and power. A wounded snake raises its hood to attack the person.
               On being disturbed a simple flame bursts into a big fire. The lion roars in anger and his sound fill in the desert. They don’t loose courage even in their troubles.
Note: Here the poet explains that every action has its reaction in the world.

Context: Here the poet tells us about those honors that may appear before us in life.
Explanation: The poet advises us that we should not be afraid of when our eyes get weak or the heat it loose it power. He further says that we should not be nervous about a faithless friend or unfaithful lover.
               He encourages us to stand bravely and face all the troubles of life. A man should not be afraid of his ill-fate. He wants us to march on bravely and never cares for the danger of life.
Note: Every man has divine soul so he should not loose courage before the tears and troubles of life.
