The Scholar -Robert

Central idea
“Good friends and Good books make
a man scholar.”
In this poem the poet likes the
personality of a scholar. Then he tells us the scholar’s feelings towards the
great writer of the past.
A scholar passes his time among the
books of the great writer of the olden time. He gets joy in happiness and
relief in sorrow from them. He is thankful to them for noble idea. He
loves their merits and hates demerits.
After his death he will do in their
company. He hopes that his name will not be forgotten with the passage of time.

Every times he likes to read the
books and enjoys their company. These books are his true friend. He does not
live without them. Indeed the poet learns knowledge and skill from the books of
great writers of the past.

Central Idea
“Nature is the first teacher of
the teachers”
In the poem ‘Education Of Nature’ the poet describes nature as the best
teacher. Lucy is an imaginary child of nature. She grows up for three years in
the lap of nature. Nature wants to educate Lucy in her own way. She will take
her to mountains, plains and valleys.
The clouds will teach her how to
walk gracefully. The bending of willow will teach her modesty in life. The
storm will teach her grace. Thus, nature will be the guide and teacher of Lucy.
But it is sad that Lucy died soon.
Her death gives a deep shock to the poet and the nature. He finds himself alone
in the waste land, lost in her sweet memory.
Note: Nature has the wonderful
plan for the peace and rest of every person in the world.

Explanation: The poet says that Lucy will very
dear to nature. She will learn morality and nobility from nature. So her
personality will become very impressive.
Lucy will move everywhere in the
natural atmosphere. She will see rocks, plains, open places and shady places
under the trees.
After seeing all these things, she
will feel a wonderful natural power that controls and commands everything in
the world.
In
this way nature will play a very important role in making the character of
Lucy.
2. The floating clouds

Explanation: The poet says that the floating
(moving) clouds of the sky will give grace and beauty to Lucy. The bending
branches of willow trees will teach Lucy modesty. She will also enjoy the
beauty of storm in the forest. So she will not lose her courage to see ups and
downs of life. She will develop tolerance in her life.
Thus by and by Lucy will become
young in the nature’s company, nature will make wonderful change in her
unmarried personality slowly and smoothly.
