ENGLISH-1ST PAPER- POETRY(XI) POEM-10

     Poem-10
The Palanquin Bearers               - Sarojini Naidu
                                                                                                                               (1879-1949)
                                                                        Central Idea
In this poem the poetess describes how the palanquin bearers are carrying the palanquin from one place to the other.
The palanquin moves like a flower in the wind. She glides along in the air like a bird. She floats in the air like a laugh in the dream. She looks like a pearl hanging on a string. She looks to be hanging like a star on a dew drop. She falls like a tear from the eyes of a bride. The palanquin bearers sing sweetly when they march forward. Thus the poetess takes her as living being and also gives personal touch and respect.
Note: There is good use of simile in the poem and the poetess feels that the palanquin is not only beautiful but also emotional.
                                                                         Explanation

1. Lightly, o lightly …………………………………………………………………….. dream.
Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem ‘The Palanquin Bearer’ composed by ‘Sarojini Naidu’, The Nightingale of India.
Context: Here the poetess describes the manner in which the palanquin bearers carry it from one place to the other. They are very happy and excited too.
Explanation: The poetess wants to tell us that the palanquin bearers carry the palanquin with bride inside it very lightly and slowly (patiently). She compares it to a flower and song of the bearers to the wind.
The palanquin moves ‘To and Fro’ like a flower in the wind. It moves slowly in the air as a bird moves on a stream. She float in the air as laughter in dream.
In this way the poetess is comparing the movements of the palanquin to different natural objects. She gives a personal touch and respect to her.
Note: There is a fine use of simile in the line:

She sways like a flower in the wind of our song.
