Q.1) What was the name of the author’s pen pal?
Ans.: The name of the author’s pen pal was Alice. She lived in Los Angeles, America.
Q .2) Why was the author so keen to have a pen pal?
Ans.: The author was so keen to have a pen pal because it was the fashion of his time. Many boys and girls of his class had made pen pal in other country. They received fast air mails from their friends. So the writer also wanted to take a pen pal.
Q .3) How old was the author when he entered a pen friendship?
Ans.: The author was a college student when he entered in open friendship. He was twenty one year old at that time.
Q .4) Why did the author choose to buy an expensive writing pad? What prompted him to buy a writing pad of pink sheets?
Ans. The writer bought an expensive writing pad to make a good impression on his pen pal. He was advised to buy a writing pad of pink sheet because a girl of his class told him that she loved letters written on pink sheet. So he thought that all the girls would love pink sheets.
Q .5) What did the author feel when he wrote his first letter to Alice?
Ans. When the author wrote his first letter to Alice, he was as nervous as a school boy taking his very first exam. He also felt as if he was facing enemy’s bullet as he dropped the letter into the post box.
Q.6) What was the effect of Alice’s first letter on the author?
Ans. after receiving Alice’s first letter, the author read it many times. The letter gave him all the joy of life. He felt as he was in seventh heaven.
Q.7) Why did the Author ask Alice her picture?
Ans. The Author asked the picture of Alice to know the age of her beauty.
Q.8) Why did Alice not send her picture to the author immediately?
Ans. Alice did not send her picture to the author because she did not want to disappoint the Author by telling the fact that she was an old lady.
Q.9) What changes took the place in the life of the author as years rolled by?
Ans. As years rolled by, the author grew olden, got a job, married and had children. He did not write a letter to Alice regularly.
Q.10) Who sent a large packet to the author from America? What did it contain?
Ans. A close friend of Alice sent a large packet to the author from America. It contained a few magazines and a short note about her death.

Why does the author call his correspondence with Alice a game of hide and seek?
Ans. pen pal is a romantic story by G. Srinivasrao. The story gives us an idea of pen friendship. It has a great scope for our young people.
           Though pen friendship we can come in contact with people of different countries. We know their custom and culture, exchange gift with them and develop international brother hood for peace and pleasure.
The author was a twenty one years old college student when he fells in love with his pen pal. She was an American girl. The author wrote a letter to her and received its reply. He was very happy to have a loving pen pal. After some time, he wants to know about her beauty and age. So he asked her picture but being very clever she told him that at present she had no picture. But very soon she would sent to him. Though she was not too smart and stylist.
         After this the author though that Alice was too clever and smart. She was hiding something. His mood changed and he called his friendship as a game of hide and seek. Now, he did not write to her regularly. He became a man of word. He was got married too.
          One day he received a large packet from America. It was the close friend of Alice. She told the writer that Alice died in a car accident last Sunday. She was seventy eight years old. So she could not see the car. But she became very happy to know about you. She was alone in the world and helping others was her passion.
         Now the author was very emotional felt great respect for Alice in his heart, he saw her photo and impressed greatly.
          The story teaches us that our young people should learn to have move self control in the field of love and romance. They should not follow any girls blindly.

Ans. The police man on the beat was going up the street impressively. He was trying every door with his club. He also looked at the lonely road.
Q.2) Who was the man to discover that Bob was wanted by the police? Mention his source of information?
Ans. Jimmy was the man to discover. That Bob was wanted by the police.
Q.3) When and where had the two friends parted twenty years ago?
Ans. Jimmy and Bob were parted with each other after twenty years ago from “Big Joy and Bready” restaurant in New York.
Q.4) How did Jimmy manage to get his friend arrested?
Ans. When Jimmy came to know that Bob was a criminal wanted by the police, he did not arrested him but he sent another policeman in plain clothes to arrested him.
Q.5) Who had sent plain clothes man to arrest Bob?
Ans. Jimmy had sent plain clothes man to arrest Bob.
Q.6) What was Bob’s face like?
Ans. Bob’s face was pale and square – jawed. His eyes were keen. There was a little white scar near his right eyebrow.
Q.7) Why did Jimmy get Bob arrested?
Ans. Jimmy got Bob arrested for his criminal ways. He was an honest police man. So he thought that a criminal should be arrested no matter If he was his friend.
Long answer type Question;-
 Q.1) Bring out the qualities of Jimmy as a policeman and as a friend?
Ans.  ‘After twenty year’ is the story of two sincere friends. They are Jimmy and Bob. Once they sat in a restaurant and discussed their future career. They promised to meet each other just on the same time, date and place after twenty years. So Bob goes to the west and becomes a rich man by unfair means.
He is wanted by police. But Jimmy does not go outside his city and becomes a dutiful policeman. He always remember Bob and his friendship.
The main qualities of  Jimmy as a policeman and as a friend are given below:
1. Jimmy as a friend: Jimmy was a true friend of Bob. They loved each other very much since their childhood days. Bob says that Jimmy will meet him there if he is alive because he is very true and best friend in the world.
             When Jimmy found that Bob was a criminal, he wanted to arrest him. But being a loving friend, he did not arrest Bob himself. He was shocked to see him as a bad man. In this way Jimmy kept his promise of twenty year ago and proved himself as a good friend and true well- wisher.
2. Jimmy as a policeman:  jimmy had all the good qualities of an able policeman. His body is tall and strong. He goes on the beat in every weather. His eyes are watchful. He looks like a guardian of peace.
                    He is an honest policeman. He loves law and order more than any other thing in the world. After seeing Bob as a criminal he decided to punish him. He thought that every criminal should be caught and sent to the jail. But he was also a great friend. So he moves a way from there and sent another policeman in plain clothes to arrest him.
                           Thus we have seen that Jimmy was not only a good  friend but also a dutiful policeman. He has a high respect for his duty and low.
Q.3) Compare and contrast the character of Jimmy and Bob.? OR
        How did the two friends differ such from each other.
Ans.  After twenty years is a teachingful story by ‘O’ Henry. This is the story of two fast friends-Jimmy and Bob. They loved each other very much. Once they parted for twenty year to make their career. Bob becomes a rich man but wanted by police. But Jimmy becomes a dutiful policeman.
    In this story we find that they have many similar qualities in life. But these are contrasting qualities also in their life, which are given below:-
1. Jimmy is a poor and honest policeman while Bob becomes rich in the best and he is very ambitious.
2. Jimmy is called a lazy person. But Bob says that he is a busy man.
3. By nature Bob is a talkative. Jimmy is a man of serious nature.
4. Bob likes to earn money by unfair means in life. But Jimmy is an honest man. He is sincere to his duty
5. Jimmy is a loving friend so he does not arrest Bob by himself. But Bob forgets the value of life when he begins to earn money.
   Thus we find that jimmy and Bob have very little in common. Their life is quite different with each other.
       Although their childhood was similar yet youth become different.
