Poem-7
 Our Casurina Tree                                    - Toru Dutt
                                                                                                                                (1856-1877)
Central Idea
            The poem ‘Our Casurina Tree’ shows the great love of the poetess for nature. The tree is very loving to her. She has passed her childhood days under its shade. She finds everything relating to the tree.
            She likes its deep red flowers. She is attracted by the sweet song of the birds. She watches a large monkey and kokilas on the tree. This tree reminds her friend of childhood days. She also hear a sad sound from the tree. It seems that the tree is lamenting (weeping).
            In fact the poetess has given a personal touch to the tree.
Note : the poetess finds a close touch between the tree and human emotions.

Explanation: The poetess says that she loves the tree very much. She can’t live without it she loves it day and night. It is not because of its huge shape. It is loving to her because she has passed her easy days of life (childhood) under its shade. The tree also reminds her about those friends who were very dear to heart. Even today she loves them greatly. When she remembers them, her eyes are filled with tears. Sometimes she watches and fells their images on the tree.
Note:  The poetess gives the tree a personal touch and considers it is an essential part of life.

Context: Here The poetess has told us why the tall tree has become dear to her heart. She also finds a close touch between the tree and its human emotions.
Explanation: The poetess says that the tree remains her memory all the times. She hears a murmuring sound from the tree. She compares it to a sad song. She thinks the tree is lamenting and expressing its sorrow.
          She says that the sound of it may reach to a place. Which is not known to us? Thus the tree remains in the sweet memory of the poetess. She finds a close connection of the tree with human feelings.
Note: there is a fine use of simile in the line –

                                    If                                       - Rudyard Kipling
                                                                                    (1865-1936)
                                                                    Central Idea
                               “Noble qualities are the real foundation of success in life.”
               The poem ‘If’ is an inspiring poem. In it the poet keeps before us some noble qualities which we should develop in ourselves.
               We should have balance of mind. We should have a strong will power. We should never try to show what we are not friends may not stand by us. Even then we should not be afraid.
               We should not have a sense of pride even when we achieve greatness in life.
Above all we should make the best use of our time. With these qualities, we are sure to obtain perfection in life.
                                                                    Explanation

Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem ‘If’ composed by ‘Rudyard Kipling’, A Famous Scholar Of His Time.
Context: The poet has put before us a very noble standard of life. He tells us about some good qualities which are key to success in life.
Explanation: The poet says that if we mix-up with common people, we should keep our noble qualities. In the same way if we are in the company of great men like kings, we should keep contact with common people too. Everyone should be treated equally by us.
               In that position nobody will hurt us other friend or enemy. We should keep an account of every second of our life. It means that we should make the best use of our time. If we follow these things in life, there will be joy and comfort in life. Success will be ours and we shall become a perfect man in the world.
Note: An ideal life can be passed by noble qualities.
2. if you can wait ……………………………………………………...................... too wise.

Explanation: The poet says that if you can wait for anything like standing on crossing or waiting the train and not to be tired and if anybody told a lie about you, do not fear and learn tell a lie in your life. And if anybody hate you then do not hate him.
The poet says that the quality of politeness and modesty or kindness should have in our life. And he says that we should never try to show what we are not, we should not talk too intelligently. We should not have a sense of pride in life.
With these qualities we are sure to achieve fame and greatness in the world.
3. if you can force …………………………………………………………………….. hold on.

Explanation: The poet says that a man should believe in the power of his mind and soul if he faced much loss in life, he should not lose his courage. He should have a strong will power in life. After some time he would be able to overcome all the troubles.
Thus a man can recover all the things that are gone from his life. He should work with full mind and heart and never be hopeless in life.
Note: noble qualities are the secret of success in life.
                                                                             Poem-9
                                                             Nightingales                                    - Robert Bridges
                                                                                                                              (1844-1930)
                                                                        Central Idea
In this poem the poet rejects the romantic view of the birds. The poet thinks that nightingales comes from some beautiful woods where stars shine at night and atmosphere is full of sweet scents. So its song is sweet.
               But after some times he feels that the bird is subject to the same law of living as man. According to him the song of nightingales is no more than a physical necessity. It is an expression of the hearts pain which is caused by the unfulfilled desire of their life.
Note: The poet thinks that nightingales are happy but this is not the fact as they have also tears and troubles in life.
                                                                 Explanation

Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem ‘Nightingales’ composed by ‘Robert Bridge’, A Great Philosopher.
Context: Here the poet presents the wrong romantic view that nightingales come from some happy place.
Explanation: The poet says that the mountains from where the nightingales come must be beautiful. The stream must be bright and valleys must be full of flowers and fruits. In such a good place they learn their song.
               The poet wishes that walk in those forests over which the stars shine at night. He want to enjoy the smell of flowers which spring whole the year.
So the atmosphere becomes sweet and good. In this way the poet presents the romantic view which tells us that nightingale come from some beautiful place and sweet song.
Note: The poet imagines that nightingales life is very peaceful and joyful. But there is a life so sweet and joyful as the poet thinks.

Explanation: The poet says that the nightingales speak for themselves and says that the mountains are not beautiful but deserted and the streams are not shining while flowing. They are dry and have no water in them.
This song is an expression of their hearts pain. Their dreams and desires are not satisfied so they feel pain and unrest in life. Their song is the voice of their hearts unfulfilled desires. It remains in their thought all their sheltered.
The nightingales are skilled singers yet they fail to express their dreams, visions, hopes and pains of their hearts.
Note: “Time is more valuable than any other things.”
           “If you spoil the time, time spoil you.”
