लेखक गॉर्डन कुक एक 37 साल का बिजनेसमैन था। वह अपने परिवार के साथ दुनिया की समुद्री यात्रा (Around the World) करना चाहता था, जैसे कैप्टन जेम्स कुक ने 200 साल पहले की थी। उसने अपनी नाव का नाम Wavewalker रखा। यह 23 मीटर लंबी, लकड़ी की बहुत मजबूत नाव थी।
उसकी पत्नी मैरी, बेटा सु - जो 6 साल का था, और बेटी सू - जो 7 साल की थी, उसके साथ थे। जुलाई 1976 में वे इंग्लैंड के प्लायमाउथ से निकले। वे अफ्रीका होते हुए केपटाउन पहुँचे। वहाँ दो नाविक - लैरी विजिल (अमेरिकन) और हर्बर्ट सीग्लर (स्विस) उनकी मदद के लिए जुड़ गए।
2 जनवरी 1977 को समुद्र बहुत खतरनाक हो गया। तेज हवा (तूफान) चल रही थी। लहरें 15 मीटर ऊँची थीं। लेखक ने नाव की स्पीड कम कर दी, पर तूफान बढ़ता गया।
शाम 6 बजे एक बहुत बड़ी लहर आई, जैसे दीवार हो। पूरी नाव पानी में डूब गई। लेखक पानी में बह गया, पर लाइफलाइन से बंधा होने से बच गया। नाव का सारा सामान टूट गया, छेद हो गए, पानी भरने लगा।
मैरी ने कहा - "हम मरने वाले हैं"। लेखक ने कहा - "नहीं, हम कोशिश करेंगे"। उन्होंने पानी निकालने के लिए पंप चलाए। लैरी और हर्ब लगाातार पानी निकाल रहे थे।
तभी लेखक को अपनी बेटी सू का कागज मिला जिस पर लिखा था - "We are not afraid to die... if we can all be together"। इससे लेखक को बहुत हिम्मत मिली।
छोटा 6 साल का बेटा सु भी बहुत बहादुर था। उसने कहा - "Papa, we are not afraid of dying if we can all be together"।
6 घंटे तक वे पानी निकालते रहे। 36 घंटे तक बिना सोये, बिना खाये वे नाव को बचाते रहे। उनके पास नक्शे भी नहीं थे, सिर्फ हवा के सहारे नाव चला रहे थे।
आखिरकार 6 जनवरी को सुबह उन्हें एक टापू दिखा - Ile Amsterdam। यह फ्रांस का छोटा टापू था। सभी बहुत खुश हो गए। वे बच गए थे।

This is a true story by Gordon Cook.
Gordon Cook, 37 years old, wanted to duplicate Captain James Cook's round-the-world voyage. He had a 23-metre long wooden boat named Wavewalker, built very strong. He spent 16 years improving his sea skills.
He started with wife Mary, son Sue (6 years) and daughter Sue (7 years) from Plymouth, England in July 1976 to Cape Town. Two crewmen Larry Vigil (American) and Herb Seigler (Swiss) joined from Cape Town.
On 2nd January 1977, they were 3500 km east of Cape Town. Weather turned very bad. Winds 40 knots, waves 15 metres high. They slowed boat, dropped storm jib, took other precautions.
At 6 pm, a huge wave, like a wall, broke over the boat. Boat almost sank, filled with water. Gordon was thrown into sea but saved by lifeline. Boat's deck, hatches, side were broken, water entering.
Mary said "We are going to die". Gordon said they can try. They started pumping water. Larry and Herb pumped continuously, Mary steered boat.
Gordon found a card written by daughter Sue - "We are not afraid to die... if we can all be together". This gave him courage.
6-year-old son Jon said - "We aren't afraid of dying if we can all be together". He was very brave.
For 36 hours they kept pumping, without sleep, food. They had no maps, compasses were not working. They used only wind and calculated position.
On 6th January morning, they saw Ile Amsterdam island. They were saved. Sue said it was the most beautiful island. All thanked God and their unity.
