सोफी हमेशा बड़े-बड़े सपने देखती है। वह सोचती है कि स्कूल छोड़ने के बाद वह एक बहुत बड़ी बुटीक (कपड़ों की दुकान) खोलेगी जो शहर की सबसे बड़ी बुटीक होगी। अगर उसके पास पैसे नहीं हुए तो वह मैनेजर बन जायेगी, या फिर अभिनेत्री बन जायेगी। वह कहती है कि अभिनेत्री बनने के लिए पैसों की जरूरत नहीं होती। उसकी सहेली जानसी जो बहुत व्यावहारिक (practical) है, वह कहती है कि ये सब सपने हैं, हम गरीब हैं। पर सोफी नहीं मानती।
सोफी का भाई जॉफ बहुत समझदार है। वह फुटबॉल के बारे में सब कुछ जानता है। सोफी अपने भाई से बहुत प्यार करती है और उसकी हर बात मानती है। सोफी के पिता बहुत गुस्से वाले हैं और सोफी के सपनों को पसंद नहीं करते।
एक दिन सोफी अपने भाई जॉफ के साथ सड़क पर जा रही होती है और उसे एक प्रसिद्ध फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी डैनी केसी मिलता है। डैनी केसी आयरलैंड का बहुत प्रसिद्ध फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी है। सोफी उससे बात करती है और डैनी केसी उसे ऑटोग्राफ देता है। पर यह सच नहीं होता, यह सोफी का सपना होता है। सोफी घर आकर अपने भाई जॉफ को बताती है कि वह डैनी केसी से मिली। जॉफ को विश्वास नहीं होता। पर सोफी कहती है कि वह सच में मिली है।
फिर सोफी अपनी सहेली जानसी को भी यह बात बताती है कि वह डैनी केसी से मिली और डैनी ने कहा कि वह उससे अगले हफ्ते डेट पर मिलेगा। जानसी यह बात पूरे स्कूल और मोहल्ले में फैला देती है। अब सब लोग सोफी से डैनी केसी के बारे में पूछते हैं। सोफी के पिता गुस्सा होते हैं।
सोफी सच में विश्वास करने लगती है कि डैनी केसी उससे मिलने आयेगा। वह शनिवार को नहर के पास बने एक सुनसान जगह पर, जहाँ उसने डैनी को मिलने को कहा था, उसका इंतजार करती है। वह बहुत सुंदर कपड़े पहनकर, तैयार होकर जाती है। वह घंटों इंतजार करती है पर डैनी केसी नहीं आता।
अंत में सोफी को समझ आ जाता है कि डैनी केसी कभी नहीं आयेगा। वह उदास हो जाती है। पर फिर भी वह सपने देखना नहीं छोड़ती। वह फिर से सोचने लगती है कि डैनी केसी जरूर आयेगा। वह अपने भाई जॉफ के फुटबॉल मैच को देखती है और फिर से सपनों में खो जाती है।
कहानी हमें सिखाती है कि सपने देखना अच्छा है पर हकीकत से दूर बड़े-बड़े सपने देखना दुख देता है। हमें व्यावहारिक बनना चाहिए।

This story is about a poor girl Sophie who dreams big dreams.

Sophie always dreams big. She thinks that after leaving school she will open a big boutique which will be the biggest boutique in the city. If she has no money, she will become a manager or an actress. She says to become actress, money is not needed. Her friend Jansie who is practical says that these are dreams, we are poor. But Sophie does not listen.
Sophie's brother Geoff is very sensible. He knows everything about football. Sophie loves her brother very much and believes him. Sophie's father is short-tempered and does not like Sophie's dreams.
One day Sophie is going with brother Geoff and she meets a famous football player Danny Casey. Danny Casey is a famous football player of Ireland. Sophie talks to him and Danny gives her autograph. But this is not true, it is Sophie's dream. Sophie comes home and tells brother Geoff that she met Danny Casey. Geoff does not believe. But Sophie says she really met.
Then Sophie tells her friend Jansie also that she met Danny Casey and Danny said he will go on a date with her next week. Jansie spreads this news in whole school and locality. Now everyone asks Sophie about Danny Casey. Sophie's father becomes angry.
Sophie really starts believing that Danny Casey will come to meet her. On Saturday, at a lonely place near canal, where she asked Danny to meet, she waits for him. She goes wearing beautiful clothes, well-dressed. She waits for hours but Danny Casey does not come.
At last Sophie understands that Danny Casey will never come. She becomes sad. But still she does not stop dreaming. She again starts thinking that Danny will come. She watches her brother Geoff's football match and again gets lost in dreams.
The story teaches that dreaming is good but dreaming big away from reality gives pain. We should be practical.
