*कहानी:*
एक राजा था - "न्यायप्रिय" पर मूर्ख। एक बार राजा ने कहा मुझे आर्च बनवाओ। आर्च बना, पर राजा के मुकुट से नीचा। राजा को गुस्सा - जो बनाया उसे फाँसी दो। बढ़ई बुलाया, बढ़ई बोला मैंने नहीं, मजदूरों ने बनाया। मजदूर बोले हमने नहीं, मिस्त्री ने बोला। मिस्त्री बोला ईंटें खराब। इस तरह सब एक-दूसरे पर डालते गए।
आखिर में राजा बोला सबसे बुद्धिमान को लाओ, बुद्धिमान बोला आर्च ही दोषी है, आर्च को फाँसी दो। आर्च लाया गया, पर राजा का गला आर्च से नहीं पहुँचा, फाँसी कैसे दें? मंत्री बोला जो सबसे लंबा है उसे फाँसी दो। सिपाही सबसे लंबा ढूँढने गए, राजा ही सबसे लंबा निकला। इसलिए राजा को ही फाँसी दे दी।
मंत्री बोला अब नया राजा चाहिए, परम्परा है जो भी गेट से पहले आएगा राजा बनेगा। उसी समय एक मूर्ख, एक तरबूज लेकर गेट से आया, लोग चिल्लाए तरबूज राजा! इसलिए तरबूज को राजा बना दिया।
मंत्री तरबूज के नाम पर राज करता है, लोग खुश - क्योंकि तरबूज किसी को परेशान नहीं करता, सबको आज़ादी। कविता सिखाती है कि मूर्ख राजा, अंधा कानून, न्याय का मजाक, पर जनता को फर्क नहीं पड़ता बस शांति चाहिए।
