FLAMINGO (PROSE) CHAPTER-2
Lost Spring - Stories of Stolen Childhood Class 12 Question Answer | English Notes By Atul Sir। UP Board & CBSE

Lost Spring - Proper Summary in English Language)
SUMMARY IN ENGLISH (For CBSE Board)
Little Saheb-e-Alam lives in Seemapuri, a slum on the outskirts of Delhi. His name means 'Lord of the Universe' but in reality he is a poor ragpicker. His family migrated from Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1971 due to floods and poverty. 10,000 ragpickers live in Seemapuri in mud houses with no water and no sewage.
Every morning Saheb roams barefoot searching for gold in garbage dumps. Gold means a rupee or ten rupees. When the author asks him if he goes to school, he says there is no school in his area. Rich children have shoes and school, but poor children have nothing.
Later Saheb gets a job at a tea stall for Rs. 800 per month. Now he does not pick garbage, but he loses his freedom. He carries a heavy steel canister instead of a light plastic bag. He is no longer his own master. His happiness is gone.
The second part is about Mukesh who lives in Firozabad, the city of bangles. Every family there makes bangles. Mukesh's family has been doing this work for generations. But Mukesh does not want to make bangles. He wants to be a motor driver when he grows up. He wants to learn to drive a car.
The bangle makers of Firozabad are very poor. They work in dark, dingy, small rooms near hot furnaces. Their eyes become weak and they lose eyesight. They are exploited by sahukars, middlemen, policemen and politicians. They remain in debt. Mukesh's grandmother says that making bangles is their destiny and karam and it cannot be changed. But Mukesh wants to break this destiny. He courageously says "I will be a driver."
Both stories show the same thing - poverty steals the childhood (Spring) of children.

CHARACTER SKETCH OF SAHEB-E-ALAM - IN PURE ENGLISH for CBSE
Saheb-e-Alam is the central character of the first part of Lost Spring. He is a 12-14 years old poor ragpicker boy from Seemapuri, Delhi. He migrated from Dhaka, Bangladesh. His full name means 'Lord of the Universe' but irony is that he is extremely poor and lives in a slum.
He is innocent, hardworking and full of dreams. He roams barefoot searching for gold in garbage. He wants to go to school and play tennis like rich boys. He is very practical. When he gets a job at a tea stall for Rs. 800, he accepts it, but he loses his carefree life and freedom. The steel canister seems heavier than his plastic bag. He represents thousands of poor children in India who are forced into child labour and lose their childhood.
