Journey to the End of the Earth Class 12 Question Answer | English Notes By Atul Sir। UP Board & CBSE

Journey to the End of the Earth - Pure Hindi Summary For Up Board

Journey to the End of the Earth - Proper Summary in English Language)

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH (For CBSE Board)

This story is by author Tishani Doshi who went to Antarctica (South Pole) as part of 'Students on Ice' programme in which high school students are taken to Antarctica to understand climate change.

Author says Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent in world. There is 90% ice there and no trees, no cities. Going there is very difficult. She had to travel 100 hours - by car, plane and then ship (Akademik Shokalskiy).

When she reached Antarctica, she felt very strange. Everywhere white snow, blue sea and much silence. There time is not felt. There is 24 hours day also.

About history, author tells that long ago all continents were together - there was a big continent named Gondwana. 650 million years ago Gondwana existed. Then it broke and India, Africa, Australia, Antarctica separated. Antarctica is still same as before - covered with ice. So by going there we understand earth's history.

In Antarctica we come to know how much humans have damaged earth. Due to global warming, ice of Antarctica is melting. Sea level is rising. Carbon dioxide is increasing.

There author saw small plants (moss), krill (small fish-like creature), penguins, seals, whales. If krill finish, whole food chain will finish.

Leader of programme Geoff Green says reason to take students to Antarctica is that youth are future and if they understand climate change, they will save earth. Antarctica teaches us that we all are connected and we should save environment.

At last author says journey to Antarctica taught her much - that earth is very beautiful but in danger and we must save it.

JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE EARTH - LONG QUESTION ANSWER (5-6 Marks)

_Q1. Describe Tishani Doshi's journey to Antarctica._

_Ans:_ Tishani Doshi went to Antarctica as part of Students on Ice programme led by Geoff Green. She had to travel 100 hours - by car, plane and then by ship Akademik Shokalskiy.

Antarctica is coldest, driest, windiest continent with 90% ice, white snow, blue sea, silence and 24-hour daylight. She felt wonder and strange there.

She learnt about Gondwana - 650 million years ago all continents were one big continent Gondwana. Then they separated. Antarctica is still untouched and shows earth's history.

She also saw effects of climate change - ice melting, sea level rising, carbon dioxide increasing. She saw moss, krill, penguins, seals, whales. She understood that krill is base of food chain and if it finishes, all will finish.

Geoff Green's aim is to make students understand climate change by experience. The journey taught her that earth is beautiful but in danger and youth must save it.

_Q2. What is Students on Ice programme and why is it important?_

_Ans:_ Students on Ice is a programme started by Geoff Green, a Canadian. It takes high school students to Antarctica.

Its aim is to make youth understand climate change, global warming, ozone depletion by seeing Antarctica with own eyes, not just reading books. Antarctica is best place to understand earth's history (Gondwana) and future (climate change).

Geoff believes youth are future leaders and if they understand importance of saving environment, they will save earth. Antarctica teaches that we all are connected and human damage is harming earth.

The programme is important because it creates awareness among youth through experience. Tishani Doshi was also part of it and she learnt much about climate change, food chain, krill, penguins and need to save earth.

_Q3. What is the theme or central idea of Journey to the End of the Earth?_

_Ans:_ The main theme is climate change, global warming and need for environmental conservation, and understanding earth's history through Antarctica.

Antarctica is coldest, driest, windiest continent with 90% ice. It was part of Gondwana 650 million years ago. All continents were one then. So Antarctica shows earth's past.

It also shows earth's future - due to global warming, ice melting, sea level rising, carbon dioxide increasing, ozone depleting. Humans have damaged earth by using fossil fuels. Krill is base of food chain and if it finishes, all animals will die.

Geoff Green's Students on Ice programme takes students to Antarctica to make them aware and make them future leaders. Theme teaches that we all are connected and we must save earth. Youth must take action. The journey is eye-opener.

VISTAS CHAPTER-2
The Tiger King Class 12 Question Answer | English Notes By Atul Sir। UP Board & CBSE

The Tiger King - Proper Summary in English Language)

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH (For CBSE Board)

This story is about the King of Pratibandapuram, Jilani Jung Bahadur. When he was born, astrologers predicted that the King's death would be caused by a tiger. Hearing this, the 10-day-old baby spoke - "All die, what is bad in dying from tiger."

When the King became 20 years old, he came to know there are 100 tigers in Pratibandapuram. He took a vow to kill 100 tigers to remain King.

He started killing tigers one by one. He killed 70 tigers. Then tigers finished in Pratibandapuram. So he went to his father-in-law's kingdom and killed remaining tigers. He killed 99 tigers.

Finding the 100th tiger became very difficult. Tiger was not found anywhere. The King became very angry. He ordered to finish the tiger species.

Meanwhile, his son's third birthday came. The King bought a wooden toy tiger from market for his son. That wooden tiger was very cheap but had sharp wooden splinters.

When the King was playing with that wooden tiger, a sharp wooden splinter pierced into his hand. That small splinter caused wound and infection spread in whole hand. Doctors tried hard but could not save the King. The King died in 3 days.

Thus the astrologer's prediction became true. The King died due to 100th tiger, but it was not a real tiger, it was a wooden toy tiger. The story satirizes that King killed 100 tigers but died by a fake tiger. It is a satire on pride and cruelty.

CHARACTER SKETCH OF THE TIGER KING - IN PURE ENGLISH for CBSE

The Tiger King is the central character of the story. His real name is Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur, King of Pratibandapuram.

He is very proud, cruel and brave. When astrologers predicted his death by tiger, even as 10-day-old baby he challenged death and said all die.

He is very determined and stubborn. He takes vow to kill 100 tigers to disprove astrologers and to remain King. He kills 70 tigers in his own state, then goes to his father-in-law's state to kill 30 more.

He is cruel towards animals and humans. He kills tigers just for pride, not for need. He punishes his officers and even wants to marry for tigers. He bans tiger hunting for others and imposes high tax to find tigers.

He is also foolish. He does not understand that killing 100 tigers will not save him. He is so obsessed with 100th tiger that he becomes angry and mad.

In the end, he dies due to a small splinter from wooden toy tiger - the 100th tiger. His death is ironical. He killed 99 real tigers but 100th toy tiger kills him. His pride leads to his death. He represents cruel rulers who misuse power.

THE TIGER KING - LONG QUESTION ANSWER (5-6 Marks)

_Q1. Describe how Tiger King killed 100 tigers and how he died._

_Ans:_ Tiger King was King of Pratibandapuram, Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur. Astrologers predicted his death by tiger. So he took vow to kill 100 tigers.

He killed 70 tigers in his own state. Then tigers finished. He married a princess of a state with many tigers and killed 30 more tigers there. Thus he killed 99 tigers.

Finding 100th tiger was difficult. Dewan brought a weak, old circus tiger to forest. King shot it but missed. Officers secretly killed it so King thought he killed 100th tiger and celebrated.

For his son's third birthday, he bought a wooden toy tiger with sharp splinters. A splinter pierced into his hand, caused infection and he died in 3 days. Thus 100th toy tiger killed him and astrologer's prediction became true ironically.

_Q2. How does The Tiger King satirize the pride and cruelty of kings?_

_Ans:_ The Tiger King is a satire on pride, cruelty and misuse of power by kings.

The King is proud and cruel. He kills innocent tigers just to disprove astrologer and for pride, not need. He kills 99 tigers, bans tiger hunting for others, imposes high tax, punishes officers, marries for tigers. He misuses power.

He is foolish. He thinks killing 100 tigers will save him from death. But fate cannot be changed. He kills 99 real tigers but dies by a small wooden toy tiger - the 100th tiger.

Author Kalki makes fun of such kings who are cruel to animals and humans, who are proud and think they can change destiny. The story also gives message of wildlife conservation - tigers should not be killed for pride.

_Q3. What is the theme or central idea of The Tiger King?_

_Ans:_ The main theme of The Tiger King is satire on pride, cruelty, misuse of power and fate.

Story shows a King who is proud and cruel. Astrologer predicts his death by tiger. To prove astrologer wrong, he kills 99 innocent tigers. He misuses power - bans hunting, punishes Dewan, imposes tax, marries for tigers. This shows cruelty of kings.

Second theme is that fate cannot be changed. Astrologer said 100th tiger will kill King. King kills 99 but dies by 100th wooden toy tiger. Destiny is fixed.

Third theme is wildlife conservation. Killing tigers for pride is wrong. Tigers are endangered and should be protected.

Author Kalki uses humour and irony to satirize kings. King's death by toy tiger is highly ironical and shows that pride leads to fall.

The Third Level Class 12 Question Answer | English Notes By Atul Sir। UP Board & CBSE

The Third Level - Proper Summary in English Language)

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH (For CBSE Board)

This story is about Third Level at Grand Central Station, New York, told by author Jack Finney.

There is a man named Charley, 30 years old. He says there are three levels at Grand Central Station - first, second and third. But actually Grand Central has only two levels. The third level exists only in Charley's mind or imagination.

Charley lives in New York with his wife Louisa. He is under stress because modern world has fear, insecurity and worry. After Second World War, people are worried. So Charley is searching for peace and escape.

One day Charley goes to Grand Central to go home from office. He gets lost in corridors and finds a different route going down. He goes down and finds the Third Level. The Third Level looks like 1894. There are old lights, brass spittoons, small engines, people in old clothes, newspaper 'The World' dated 1894. Tickets of 1894 are available at counter.

Charley wants to go to Galesburg, Illinois from there. Galesburg is a small, peaceful town where people lived peacefully in 1894. He wants to buy two tickets - for himself and his wife Louisa. But when he gives money, clerk says this is today's money, not of 1894. Charley has modern currency.

Clerk does not give ticket. Charley gets scared and runs back to his present time.

Next day he goes to bank to exchange his modern notes for old style money. He again tries to find Third Level but he never finds the way again. He tries hard but Third Level disappears.

Charley tells this story to his friend Sam Weiner. Sam is a psychiatrist. Sam says Charley's seeing Third Level is his wish to escape from reality. He says everyone finds some way to escape from real life. For Charley, it is Third Level.

But at end there is a twist. Charley finds his grandfather's old album with an envelope. In the envelope there is a letter written by Sam Weiner. Letter says Sam himself found Third Level and went to Galesburg of 1894 and he is very happy there. He invites Charley and Louisa also there.

Then Charley knows Sam is also in 1894. His wife Louisa says Sam earlier said Third Level is just dream, but now he himself went there.

Story teaches that when man is under stress, he wants to go to peaceful world of past.

FLAMINGO (PROSE) CHAPTER-7
The Interview Class 12 Question Answer | English Notes By Atul Sir। UP Board & CBSE

The Interview - Pure Hindi Summary For Up Board

The Name of the Rose

The Interview - Proper Summary in English Language)

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH (For CBSE Board)

This chapter has two parts.

*In Part-I, the author tells about Interview.*

Christopher Silas says that interview has become very common today. Everyone gives interview. Interview started after 1880. Different people have different opinions about interview.

Some people like interview. They say interview brings truth out. But some big writers and celebrities hate interview.

For example - V.S. Naipaul says that interviews wound people, some part of them is stolen. Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, was afraid of interviews and never gave interviews. Rudyard Kipling hated interviews. His wife says Kipling hated being interviewed, he thought it was an assault and felt like a criminal being punished.

H.G. Wells also did not like interviews but he gave interviews. Saul Bellow once described interviews as being like thumbing his nose and choking.

But even today interview is very important. Through interview we get true information about a person. Interview is an art and interviewer is also an artist.

*In Part-II, there is interview of Umberto Eco.*

Umberto Eco is a famous writer and professor. He has written more than 40 books, including children's books. But he became world famous due to his novel 'The Name of the Rose' which sold more than 10 million copies.

Interviewer Mukund Padmanabhan asks him how he does so many things? How are you professor, writer, philosopher all?

Eco laughs and says he uses 'empty spaces' time. He says he has a theory - if we have empty spaces like waiting for lift, time before meeting someone, then he does work in that time. He calls it 'Interstices' (empty gaps).

Eco says he writes academic books not on weekends but on weekdays. He is first a professor, then a writer. He says he does not get bored doing same type of work.

Mukund asks why do you think The Name of the Rose became so famous? Is it a detective story?

Eco says it is a detective story but it also has religion, history, philosophy. He himself does not know why it became so famous. Maybe because people like to read difficult things.

Eco tells that in America people know him as novelist, but in Europe they know him more as scholar. He also writes columns for newspapers on Sundays.

At last Eco says that everyone has empty time in life, if we use it properly we can do many things.
